‘Rahul Gandhi Will Remain Party President’, Congress on Rumours of Resignation

Rahul Gandhi was, is and will remain the Congress president, said party’s chief spokesperson Randeep Surjewala on Wednesday. He said after days of uncertainity over Gandhi’s offer to quit the post.

These remarks were made after several senior leaders met informally under the guidance of A K Antony and discussions on party’s strategies and preparations for the upcoming assembly elections were made. The assembly elections are allocated to be held in Jammu and Kashmir, Haryana, Jharkhand and Maharashtra.

On asked about the rising topic on Rahul’s resignation, Surjewala told reporters, “Rahul ji was, is and will remain the Congress president. We have no doubt about it.” Earlier when the offer to resign was rejected by CWC, Gandhi was still firm on his decision.

He offered to quit in a meeting of the Congress Working Committee on May 25 as the party chief. However, the meeting was called on to analyze and discuss the party’s poor performance in the Lok Sabha Polls. As a fact, Congress could only bag just 52 seats.

All the senior leaders that were present in the Wednesday’s meeting were – Mallikarjuna Kharge, P Chidambaram, Ahmed Patel, KC Venugopal, Ghulam Nabi Azad, Jairam Ramesh, Surjewala and Anand Sharma. All the members mentioned were the members of the core group formed for the Lok Sabha polls.

However, Surjewala claimed as all election-related committees ceased to exist as a counter part to speculation in the media there was no core group.
